Riflescope Accuracy & Clarity Troubleshooting Guide
Many accuracy or clarity issues blamed on a riflescope are caused by mounting, ammo, rifle setup, or technique. Use this guide to diagnose the most common non-scope causes before starting a warranty claim.

Quick Diagnosis (90-Second Checklist)
- Mounting: Verify base and ring screws are clean, thread-prepped if required, and tightened evenly to manufacturer torque specs.
- Parallax & Focus: Set the eyepiece/diopter so the reticle is crisp, then set the side/focus or AO for the target distance.
- Ammo: Confirm you’re using the same load used to zero; avoid mixing lots/brands mid-group.

Mounting & Hardware Best Practices
- Base Fit: Degrease mating surfaces; ensure bases fully seat without rocking; follow manufacturer’s torque values and thread prep guidance.
- Ring Alignment: Use rings matched to tube diameter; check for even gap on both sides; avoid over-tightening which can bind the erector system.
- Eye Relief & Level: Set eye relief at your natural shooting position; level the reticle to the rifle using a reliable method (e.g., plumb line + action level).
- Witness Marks: Paint-pen small index marks on critical screws/bases to detect movement over time.
Ammunition & Ballistics
- Lot-to-lot variation: Different factory lots can change velocity and POI—re-confirm zero when switching.
- Temperature sensitivity: Powder burn changes with temperature; cold vs. hot day POI shifts are common.
- Chronograph use: Verify actual muzzle velocity; use that value in your ballistic app, not the box rating.
- Consistent zero ammo: Zero and validate with the same ammo you plan to hunt/compete with.
Rifle & Shooter Factors
- Action/Stock Screws: Uneven or loose screws change harmonics and bedding pressure.
- Barrel Heat: Groups often “walk” as the barrel warms; shoot slow strings and let it cool.
- Support & Recoil Management: Inconsistent rear-bag pressure, bipod loading, or shoulder pressure will open groups.
- Trigger Control: Jerking or prepping inconsistently adds fliers; dry-fire to refine mechanics.
- Rifle Cant: Even slight cant shifts impacts at distance—use an anti-cant level.
- New Rifle: Break in your barrel. Put at least 100 rounds through the rifle before you start blaming anything else as an issue.
Parallax, Diopter & Eye Position
- Set the diopter first: Point at a blank sky/wall; adjust eyepiece until the reticle is instantly sharp. Lock it.
- Then set parallax/focus: At each distance, adjust until the target is sharp and reticle movement over the target is minimized when you move your eye slightly.
- Maintain position: Build a repeatable cheek weld; center your pupil to avoid scope shadow.
Environmental Effects
- Mirage: Heat waves distort the target; reduce magnification or shoot during cooler parts of the day.
- Wind: Impacts horizontal dispersion; record wind calls with your groups.
- Temp Swings: Affect velocity and POI; log temperature with your DOPE.
- Sun & Glare: Use a sunshade or reposition to mitigate veiling glare.
Isolation Steps (Field Test)
- Confirm all screws (bases, rings, action) are properly tightened per manufacturer guidance.
- Set diopter correctly; set parallax for the test distance.
- Use one known, consistent ammo lot; shoot 3–5 shot groups from a stable rest.
- Let the barrel cool between groups; record conditions (temp, wind, time).
- If dialing, run a simple box test: up/right/down/left the same amount and verify return to zero.
- Swap variables one at a time (different ammo, different shooter, different rifle) to see if the issue follows the scope or stays with the rifle/ammo.
When It Might Be the Scope
- Internal fogging (moisture inside the optic).
- Reticle rotation or sudden reticle shift not caused by movement/impact.
- Zooming changes zero after parallax and mounting have been verified.
- Visible damage after impact that correlates with new symptoms.
If one or more of the above is repeatable after completing the isolation steps, contact support with your notes on mounting, torque verification, ammo lot, environmental conditions, and test targets/photos.
